Mods by Batyushki

Fire was a constant companion in medieval life. Almost every building had a fire burning, and entire towns and cities were regularly destroyed by fires that got out of control.

In this mod, villagers sometimes start accidental fires in their houses, at work or in churches. Fires will destroy building parts, trees, crops, and if you are using those mods, rubbish and stumps as well. Fires will spread to other objects within 5 metres, and eventually burn a circular area of about 20 metres in diameter. Fires won't start until you have at least 30 villagers.

When a fire starts, any Builders within 75 metres will be called on to fight the fire. They will go to a nearby well to get water in buckets, then dump the water on the fire. If the Builders arrive in time, they can put out the fire before it spreads or destroys anything. After the fire is put out or has burned itself out, Builders will return to their normal jobs. You can improve your settlement's fire-fighting ability by employing plenty of builders and having wells close by.

To help prevent fires from getting out of control, build Fire Watchtowers. When manned by a Fire Watch, these towers give you extra time to fight the fire before it spreads. Fire Watchtowers have an effective radius of 75 metres. With a Fire Watchtower, Builders and a Well nearby, it's likely that a fire will be stopped before it damages anything. Watchtowers unlock at 25 villagers.

An optional upgrade to the Watchtowers is a Fire Brigade, which must be snapped onto the tower. This provides for 3 full-time fire fighters to help the Builders contain any blaze.

You can start fires on purpose. These are useful for clearing away trees for farms, or for the fun of seeing a building or woodland burn down. Set more than one fire so that the Builders don't put out intentional fires too quickly.

Watchtowers and the part for starting fires are in the Service menu.

Can you confirm that buildings partially destroyed by fire will not be "repaired"? For example some houses that lost a bunch of decorative elements or cabbage fields from your vegetable mod where half the cabbages have burned down but not the rest. I need to destroy those building and rebuild them, right?

Is it possible to make fires ignore terrain? Having the ground collapse because a home caught fire is annoying, and immersion breaking.

Amazing mod though, love using fire starting to clear a forest for farms!

Batyushki @batyushki

UristMcKerman thanks for the feedback, I'm about to release a change which should avoid this issue.

UristMcKerman @uristmckerman

That's awesome!

Tazmanyak @tazmanyak

This work very well, very good job on this new feature!
I would honestly expect ALL villagers to drop anything they do to fight fires tbh (or maybe all villagers in a radius of the fire?). It feels so weird to see the whole population going on their regular duties while their house is on fire eheh

FIRE! FIRE! heh heh heh FIRE! Great, now my inner Arsonist can come out!

mat49a2 @marek-tarnacki

There's an error, see - the fire is burning between the fire department building and the builders building. Both are fully staffed. And yet no one is putting out the fire. Ten minutes pass and no response from the firefighters.
I had the same thing when I had a fire downtown - no response from the firefighters. Maybe it's just that they don't see big fires?

I attach the game transcript - maybe it will be useful? :)

Batyushki @batyushki

Thanks, I'll look into this.

Batyushki @batyushki

mat49a2 this bug should be fixed in the latest patch.

Batyushki @batyushki

Based on mat49a2's suggestions I've made the following changes:
- Possibility of permanent fire fighters from the tower (Builders still work on fires too)
- Water is now made available to fire fighters from the Watchtower, in addition to other wells

I've also made the fire look more interesting for tall buildings by climbing it up any tall structures, where possible.

mat49a2 @marek-tarnacki

Thank you for your quick response :)

mat49a2 @marek-tarnacki

Thanks to your work, this game is getting more and more interesting.

Batyushki @batyushki

mat49a2 glad you are enjoying the mods. This one was actually quite difficult to implement, there were many bugs and performance issues to overcome. And probably some bugs I have not found yet.

mat49a2 @marek-tarnacki

Bugs will come out after extended use. :) The first thing I would change - is assigning builders to put out fires. Why - my town center burned down because they were building a tower for a firefighter in another
settlement. Why not add a fire station to the tower and assign "full-time" firefighters? Second - just like in security, after the construction you can see the range.
I also think it would be good for the well to be an integral part of the firehouse. So that when they go to put out a fire they have water right away, and not to look for a well

Batyushki @batyushki

All good suggestions, I will see what I can do.

mat49a2 @marek-tarnacki

I was just thinking that if you wanted to make "professional" firemen, it would be useful to make some "uniforms" for them, like red jackets :)

I have a fire tower here, 12 builders are in the center building, and again I have a fire that no one is putting out

One more comment - it would be good if when you click on the message ,,FIRE" it would take you to the fires.

Batyushki @batyushki

This is unfortunately not yet possible in mods.

mat49a2 @marek-tarnacki

Too bad, I get the "fire" message and I'm "flying" all over the map to locate it
