Sometimes it can be difficult to access iron ore, due to the location of quarry deposits and the extent of your territory. This mod allows villagers to construct underground mines in any location. This is not as efficient as mining from iron quarries, and it requires inputs to build and maintain the tunnels. However it will yield small amounts of iron ore to be used in making tools, weapons and barrels.

Each metre of new tunnel requires 1 wood, 1 plank, and 1 candle. There is a 15% chance of generating 1 unit of iron ore for each metre of tunnel that the miners build. Digging the tunnel creates mining spoil (the soil and rock that must be removed from the tunnel). Spoil is removed from the tunnel by a worker who takes it to a Spoil Heap. If you fail to remove the mining spoil, eventually the miners will stop working.

Candles can be obtained from the Monastery beekeepers, or from the Livestock mod.

The underground mine unlocks at 20 villagers and is found in the Resource Production menu.

Ooooh! Can Hobbit holes be far behind?
On a side note...Will there be a chance to find Gems? Or perhaps Gem Mines? We need Gemsmith and Goldsmith specialists to work in Jewelry workshops to add a layer of realism.

I need candles to run this, but candle require tools and tools require iron. But the only reason I built the mine in the first place was to GET iron. This doesnt make sense...

Batyushki @batyushki

ToniKlenk if you build the candle maker extension I don't think it requires tools anymore? Honestly I haven't played much with that building, I usually make candles from my livestock farms mod which requires only wood and tallow.

Either way I think the real issue is that the vanilla candlemaker requires tools, I think I will make an update to my balancing mod that removes that as it seems odd to me.

Gingarpenguin @gingarpenguin

Candles still require iron even with the extension.
So im using 1 iron for a chance to get 1iron?

Batyushki @batyushki

Yes if you're not using livestock farms mod, or balancing for realism, I agree it doesn't make sense. In the latest version of Balancing for Realism I changed the recipes for candles to only wax and wool for the vanilla candlemaker.

I still don't want to change the candle requirement for underground mines though, they need the candles to see. I think there has been enough feedback about the vanilla candle recipe that maybe the devs will change it. In the meantime you have those other two mods to remove iron and tools as inputs.
